Spring Virtual Workshop 2024:
Here, Now, and Between Us: Functional Analytic Psychotherapy and the power of the therapeutic relationship
6 CE credits
Workshop Description:
Increase the emotional intensity, interpersonal focus and impact of your treatment. Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) uses functional analysis to create deep, meaningful and healing therapeutic relationships. By focusing on the subtle ways clients' daily life problems occur in the context of therapy and by augmenting the therapist repertoires identified as awareness, courage and love (behaviorally defined) in responding contingently to emotional and interpersonal target behaviors, clients are helped to resolve presenting symptoms and to delve into their purpose and passion for living. FAP calls for therapeutic stances and techniques that no single orientation would predict, and provides a conceptual and practical framework that concretely builds skills to help practitioners reach their highest aspirations.
This workshop is appropriate for mental health professionals, including Psychologists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, and Psychiatric Nurse-Practitioners.
Instructor:
Mavis Tsai, PhD, co-creator of FAP (with the late Robert Kohlenberg, PhD ABPP), is a clinical psychologist and senior research scientist at University of Washington’s Center for Science of Social Connection. She is the co-author of five books on FAP (some of which have been translated into Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Korean, Persian and Polish), and over 75 articles and book chapters. She is a recipient of Washington State Psychological Association’s Distinguished Psychologist Award and is a Fellow of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. As Founder of the nonprofit organization ‘Awareness, Courage & Love Global Project” which brings FAP to the general public, she trains volunteers to lead chapters in six continents to create a worldwide network of open-hearted change-seekers who strive to meet life’s challenges through deepening interpersonal connection and rising to live more true to themselves.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the five FAP rules that increase connection, intensity, and effectiveness in your interventions.
2. Identify when commonly used interventions can be inadvertently counter-therapeutic.
3. Explore and express the deeper recesses of your true self -- what feels unseen, unmet, and unheld -- so that you can increase depth and connection in your therapeutic relationships.
4. Identify and address how your clients can activate your own problematic behaviors such that you can enhance your target behaviors as a therapist
5. Practice using all five FAP rules to facilitate generalization of client in-session progress.
