Session 2:

Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Practice:
What Psychologists Need to Know

Session Summary:

In this webinar, the emerging intersection of clinical psychology and artificial intelligence will be introduced, exploring tools such as ChatGPT, AI scribes, and mental health apps. The session will cover foundational concepts, practical applications, and key issues including privacy, ethical and social implications, and responsible clinical use—addressing questions such as how client data flows are managed, how to evaluate companies' privacy claims, and whether and how to use mental health apps with clients. Participants will gain practical insights for engaging thoughtfully with AI in clinical practice, and there will be ample time for questions to explore real-world concerns and implications.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Fabricius is an Applied Social Psychologist (University of Guelph), and her research examines the ethical, social, and philosophical implications of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and data practices in psychology across research, clinical work, and teaching. Her work focuses on the often-overlooked ethical challenges of data-intensive and AI-enabled technologies, including privacy, environmental and labour impacts, emerging risks associated with AI scribes and cloud-based clinical systems, and the influence of generative AI on undergraduate psychology education.

A central thread of this research re-imagines what “data” is, emphasizing its material and relational dimensions to challenge the uncritical influence of Big Tech in psychological knowledge production and to expand ethical thinking beyond narrowly prescriptive frameworks. Dr. Fabricius is also interested in how digital technologies intersect with health and healthcare, such as AI-based decision support tools, health tracking apps, and data linking, and how these technologies shape care, expertise, and trust in clinical settings.

Although theoretically grounded, this work is always applied, offering practical insights and recommendations to support psychologists in engaging digital technologies in socially responsible, justice-oriented, and ethical ways.

For any questions, please email: ContEd.MPS@gmail.com

The Manitoba Psychological Society is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists.
